This historic Hudson Valley farmhouse has undergone a spectacular renovation worthy of a “This Old House” feature; its remarkable transformation from homely to handsome, from plain to the perfect Upstate home, took a mere six months. In less careful hands such a short turn-around might have resulted in a builder-grade fix-up; in this case it resulted in a masterminded showpiece that incorporates buried historical detail from the home’s site and across the region. It is now a stunning, one-of-a-kind home that’s a jewel in Kerhonkson (AKA “Kerhampton”),NY’s cap. The home, and the attached barn were built by Luther Terwilliger in 1851, and the house was at times ownedby Terwilliger descendants, Dupuys and Coddingtons all well-known names in Hudson Valley history. In recent years the house’s character was hidden under a wrap of vinyl siding. During renovation it was removed to reveal original clapboard which was salvaged wherever possible, and matched with sustainably harvested Vermont hemlock where necessary, then painted with historically appropriate colors and accented with wood from the three new covered porches and a stone patio. Likewise, interior renovations revealed a gorgeous mortise and tenon post and beam structure, which is now partially exposed for character. A grand two-story kitchen now occupies the original barn, with luxury fixtures, second-story transoms, quartz countertops, a 9-foot island with seating, a sliding barn door salvaged from a nearby structure which leads to the adjacent laundry room with access the stone basements, and access to the bluestone patio built of engraved slabs found buried in the door yard during renovations. The floors throughout are a combination of original wide-board heart pine and matching pine boards salvaged from 1850’sfactory flooring; the decking is milled from ramparts of the old Tappanzee Bridge; the firepit was built using stone from an old well on the property; many vintage fixtures and details were procured from the famous Zaborski Emporium in Kingston it is an amalgamation of Hudson Valley building that feels seamless. While literally no stone was left unturned in displaying the home’s historical character, the necessary newer elements of the home are state of the art: geothermal radiant heating and hot water, new wiring with 200 amp service, a new well pump, new plumbing and a new water filtration system, Pella windows, and a surprising folding Pella door system that opens a wall of the living room to the back deck and the beautiful park-like backyard not something you see every day in an antique farmhouse. The bathrooms feature Spanish porcelain tile walls, recycled glass flooring in the showers, and dual flush water closets. The second-floor primary suite features multiple closets, a bath with a shower for two, and a library area. The two other light-filled second-floor bedrooms share a bathroom with a soaking tub. It is worth noting that the geniuses behind this renovation also took the time to consider the outdoor spaces surrounding the house, and how the home might be used – creating a home that is truly move-in-ready. New wooden fencing creates privacy, bounds a charming gravel parking area that could also host a great party, and provides a magical entrance to the backyard where mature black walnut and cherry trees provide shade and mulched paths lead to protected wetlands. In short, there is nothing about this property that is not special.
